1. Discuss the role of motivation in performance management

Ans: An individuals’ motivation level have a significant impact on his/her performance levels. When an individual enjoys what he/she does the quality of work improve significantly and individuals’ commitment and loyalty to the organization also improve significantly. On the other hand an individual who experiences low level of motivation is likely to do the bare minimum in his/her job, and this behavior is likely to be infectious as spread to others in the organization.

2. How can managers enhance employee motivation through performance management techniques?

Ans: It has been argued that motivation is primarily internal, and that external stimuli can help increase an individuals’ motivation level. An organizations managers can try to enhance individual’s motivation level through creating an environment which is conducive to hard work. In addition managers can increase motivation by ensuring that individuals have clear goals, clear standards and are provided the necessary resources to perform their jobs. Through ensuring that organizations culture and environment promote partnership and sense of belonging, managers can enhance individual motivation levels.

3. It is well known that individuals on international assignments, as well as those working in different countries operate under unique contextual and cultural realities. How would motivation differ in such environments?

Ans: The first thing that international managers should recognize is that individuals in different countries are motivated by different things. Thus managers in international organizations should not assume that all employees will be motivated by the same stimuli. Accordingly they should try to understand the culture of each nation and the subtle nuances of each culture, so as to create appropriate condition at the various location that may motivate individuals.
