1. Why is it important to create and implement separate performance management processes for expatriates?

Ans: When an individual is sent to work in other country, he/she faces a different set of contextual factors than he/she experiences at home. For example an expatriate would face language issue which may affect his/her ability to perform the job. Similarly the local cultural norms can impact the expatriate’s ability to do his/her job. In addition local laws and technology all play a significant role in determining the expatriate’s success or lack their off. Accordingly, it is clear that the PMS should be designed keeping in mind these ground realities.

2. What are some of the different contexts under which expatriates are required to operate?

Ans: An expatriate may sometime be the only person from his/her country, or be in a country where people like him/her are look down upon. In other cases, an expatriate may be in the middle of war-torn nation or in a nation where he has difficult time finding food that he/she likes.

3. How do the unique circumstances of the new country impact the expatriate’s ability to perform his/her job?

Ans: Any of these conditions can impact expatriates’ ability to do his/her job. For example if an expatriate has a difficult time communicating with the local people this would slow him/her down, because it would take them longer to get things done. To take another different example, an expatriate may be used to getting things done through his/her connections. However this may not be the case in new location and the expatriate may need to find other ways to get things done. In all such cases, the PMS should incorporate and reflect the reality on the ground.
