Think of a time when you praised someone just to get them to like you. How did it make you feel? Did you achieve your goal? Can you think of a situation when you tried this, but you failed? Now, think of a time when someone praised you just to get you to like them. In all these situations, how did the extra effort made to get someone to like us affect the relationship? In the workplace, when some people make extra efforts to get their supervisor(s) to like them, what impact does that have on the relationship and the outcomes controlled by the supervisor? Is it fair to those who don’t make any such efforts?
