Year 1 – Recording over time
- Learn about changes in the seasons.
Within a context of a ‘time capsule’, divide the children into groups to create ‘evidence bags’ for their time capsule. There needs to be 4 groups of children, each looking at a different season. The contents of the ‘evidence bags’ can vary and should be guided by the children. Ensure that there is access to a range of resources for this - capture the children’s observations of the school environment during different seasons. Use photos, paintings, drawings, annotated artefacts (for example, leaves and twigs) stuck on paper with labels, paper and written discussions.
Once the bags are complete, bring the children back together to explore what each group has compiled. Open evidence bags from the beginning of the year to the end and discuss. Encourage children to observe the characteristics of the seasons.
