Chapter Summary

In this chapter, we have covered cultural factors that must be considered in order to provide effective therapy. In addition, some ethical and legal considerations were presented to add to the formula for good therapy. Both require that you have an awareness of your own values to work effectively with clients and to help you make ethical decisions. And finally, individual considerations such as how to be a good client and which directions to take in therapy were discussed. All of these factors form the necessary foundation for applying the basic skills of counseling. The next chapter focuses on how theory and skills combine in the phases of counseling.
