Student Notes

In this chapter we focus on ‘belonging’; how and why it is that people feel attached to place in particular. The chapter will:

  • assess the significance of ‘belonging’, and ask what, if anything, is specific to Scotland.
  • examine the importance of locality and place in Scotland.
  • observe how jokes and humour reveal meanings of place.
  • apply the concept of ‘cultural intimacies’ and ‘kailyardism’ to Scotland.
  • analyse the applicability of ‘community’ in a Scottish context.
  • show how ideas of person, place and nation apply to Scotland.
