Student Notes

This chapter explores the dominant imagery of Scotland as ‘country’ and ‘Highland’. In particular, it asks:

  • Can we be sure that ‘the land’ really matters to people, and if so, why?
  • Is Scotland so different from other places?
  • Why is there such a focus on High-Land, on the Gàidhealtachd, when fewer and fewer of us live there?
  • How do relations of power with regard to land operate, both in material and in ideological terms?
