Workshop and discussion exercises

Practice with these exercises to prepare for your seminars and wider research.

1. Conduct your own narrative analysis of the interview with Joanna. You can focus, for example, on narrative structure, the dialogue that the narrators hold with dominant norms around motherhood, and on the interaction between the interviewer and the research participant.

2. Conduct your own interpretative phenomenological analysis of the interview with Joanna. Discuss with others your descriptive coding and how you came to generate your interpretative themes. What does your analysis tell you about her lived experience?

3. How does Joanna’s interview differ from Wendy’s in terms of its narrative structure and its messages about her lived experience?

4. Try this exercise for these other qualitative interview transcripts .
