Workshop and discussion exercises

Practice with these exercises to prepare for your seminars and wider research.

1. Outline the structure of:
(a) theoretical dissertation investigating xenophobia;
(b) an empirical dissertation investigating the same topic.

What headings and subheadings might appear in each one?

2. Choose a social issue that is currently in the news (e.g. climate change, street protests, political corruption, inequality, wars). Develop a researchable question about this that involves combining a theoretical and an empirical concept. What research design and methods would you use to answer it? What ethical and practical issues does the project raise?

3. Using a research question you have devised (perhaps in the previous exercise):
(a) investigate what secondary sources exist that might enable you to answer this question;
(b) investigate what archived data exists that could be used for a secondary analysis answering the question.
